Dads Matter Too

Dads Matter Too was a film and media arts project initiated by young Dads from Wiltshire and Swindon who'd done Dads-to-be courses with U-Too Community Business and wanted to voice their experiences of fatherhood to an ambitiously wide audience. They fundraised and planned the project, which Jackie facilitated from November 07 to Summer 08. [Funding from a range of sources including Big Boost, Prince's Trust, WYPOF, Surestart Wiltshire, Arts Award Access Fund, Swindon Rotary]

It was so successful we added music technology, photography, arts award sessions - for dads, partners, children and visited Tate Modern. Dads have spoken at county training events, local and national radio, TV, press. The DVD was launched with a VIP screening at the Wyvern Theatre, Swindon on 28th June. The group won the Prince's Trust SW Community Impact Award 2008. We made a 2009 calendar (100 in circulation), 28 minute film with 80 minute extras on DVD (350+ copies in circulation, with an order for 2000 in process).

From the start Jackie set up a team blog which tracks the progress and impact of the project to date, showing 4500+ hits from around the world. Have a look at all the latest news and pictures, watch the trailer and find out how to order your copy of the DVD and the Dads Matter Calendar 2009!

Around 350 people were at the preview on 18th January. The exhibition was open daily until 6th April 2008.

Film-making Project with 'Nameless' youth group, Codford and Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, 2007.

In the cold February half term the young people who had been planning and writing the short film over 8 months , filmed on location in Codford, Wiltshire. Supported by the WWT Education Officer, and Media Artist Jackie Calderwood, young people learnt new skills in acting, camera work, editing and composition. Jackie took all their ideas away to base the final edit on, with young people having a final input viewing a rough edit of the film. With funding from Sustain the Plain, the film was shown at a special public screening event in the village, before touring around Wiltshire. L'Eauest Point was shown at the Salisbury International Arts Festival alongside a feature film about rivers and water control in India; also at both Chippenham and Salisbury as part of the Preloader Film Festival.

Digital Arts Residency with Year 6, St Martins Junior School, Weston super Mare Summer Term 2007:

During the residency 30 students from one year 6 class learnt new skills by taking part in a range of media arts activities:

Storyboarding ideas for the video that would document around 400 children doing twelve arts activities during a two week programme.

Learning how to use video cameras, tripods, microphones.

Designing a logo for their project, and print for the DVD and case.

Video editing, how to add titles, voiceovers, music , transitions...

Designs and ideas for the commissioned mural panels.

With a period of off-site work for Jackie to work up ideas into finished pieces of work, we completed a 20 minute video of the arts weeks activities, selected images from the arts week footage, and finally printed and installed two large scale digital mural panels, incorporating elements of design from the children, on permanent display within the school.

3.5 x 2 m, 1.2 x 2 m.
